A recent study by Dubner and Levitt favorably compares child safety seats to seat belts in crash studies. My opinion as a certified car seat technician, is that when a child is properly retrained in a correct car seat, they will be much safer then if only in seat belts.
Car safety seats will have a 5 point harness which is inherently safer then a standard seat & shoulder belt. Granted a seat belt will offer more protection then without any restraint, in some crashes, a child can still slip under the seat belt, shoulder belt and risk ejection from a car. In addition, recent articles show that rear facing safety seats as long as possible will be up to 500% safer compared with front facing seats.
Hopefully, parents and caregivers will be prudent and still follow the advice of NHTSA, and continue to use car safety seats and have them properly installed.

In addition to free supplies & backpacks, families enjoyed music by JACK FM, folklorico dancing, nutrition workshops, participatory arts & crafts events, games, giveaways, car seat safety checks and child ID kits by Kids Are 1st and a performance by The Conductors.
"Kids today need that extra encouragement to keep them focused on learning," says Gabriela Flores, Community Resources Manager, City of Burbank. "The idea here is to engage students and boost their desire to learn by demonstrating community wide support for them to stay in school."

Please read the Bill Moyers PBS interview of Wendell Potter. I felt the same way Mr. Potter felt about the free open air healthcare clinics that are going on now in the Los Angeles Forum in Inglewood. I also got the feeling this was happening in a foreign country. It couldn't be happening in my country, the USA, but it is!
Why is a non-profit organization offering free healthcare to thousands of uninsured and underinsured people in the USA? Why is anyone still uninsured or underinsured? Why has our government not had the courage for the past 50 years to do the right thing and say NO to the insurance lobby and medical lobby who likes the status quo.
Read the article and hopefully it will enlighten you as it did me. It is my opinion that we are at a turning point in our countries history. We have the chance to show the world that the greatest country on earth can fix a broken healthcare system. This is our chance to create the best healthcare system on earth and have all other counties follow our lead. It is about time.
Robert Kennedy said that one of president Kennedy's favorite quotes was a Dante quote that, "The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of moral crisis, maintain a neutrality."
Lets all speak up and tell our elected officials to pass a history making healthcare bill that all Americans can be proud of. Universal healthcare is a right and not a privilege.

Autism Insurance Questions/Concerns | |
![]() |
Last December, Karen May, 58th Congressional district IL, was thrilled to have legislation signed into law that provided for insurance coverage of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and treatment. However, as is often the case, follow-up is needed to make sure that the law is being implemented as intended.
After hearing reports from constituents that insurance companies are claiming ignorance of the new law, and giving enrollees much run around about implementation, May brought the matter to the consumer fraud division of the Attorney General's office and to the Department of Insurance. Both offices will investigate if citizens file reports. Karen May urges you to call the Attorney General's Health Care Helpline: 1-877-305-5145 and the Department of Insurance Consumer line: 1-877-527-9431.
Karen May is committed to making sure families receive such much-needed services for their autistic children so that each child can achieve his or her potential.
I served on the Highland Park City Council with Karen in 1999-2000.Posted on 08/12/2009 at 01:34 PM in Current Affairs, Health | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)
